Pirates Plunder Pacific in Weekend Sweep

Forest Grove, Ore. – The Whitworth Pirates put together another strong offensive showing against Pacific to complete a sweep of the Boxers with a 12-2 win.

The Pirates now sit at 7-9 (4-2 NWC), while the Boxers fell to 12-6 (6-3 NWC).

Whitworth started quickly with two first inning runs scored by Nicholas Nerud and Jaxsen Swenum. In the fourth, the Pirates added four more runs, three of which were unearned. Taylor PoffenrothLiam FitzpatrickSpencer Locati, and Casey Isa all tacked on a run each bringing the score to 6-0.

The Boxers fought back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off a deep hit to left center by Chase Anderson bringing Derek Legeza and Hayden Wright home, 6-2.

In the bottom of the fifth the Pirates scored four more and added a final run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Pirates had no errors while the Boxers had two. Whitworth had six players with an RBI, Cody Simmons and Casey Isa had three each. Chase Anderson had both RBIs for Pacific.

Ryan Kingma pitched seven innings, allowing two runs. Kingma received the win making his record 3-2. Darren Crosby and Brett Thomas both pitched an inning each to close the game out.

Sam Lawrence started for the Boxers making it through 4.1 innings. While Lawrence pitched, the Pirates had 11 hits and nine runs (six earned). Gavin Bullock pitched 1.2 innings without an earned run (three unearned). Derek Ridgway closed out the last two innings with no hits and three strikeouts.

Next weekend the Pirates will travel to Salem, Oregon to compete with Willamette University. Saturday the teams will play a doubleheader at noon followed by another noon game on Sunday to close the series.
